Situated near Lewellen, Nebraska, part of Garden County, Prairie Swamp offers ownership to a one-mile span of the North Platte River that is protected as a game refuge. Located 3 hours northeast of Denver and 2.5 hours east of Cheyenne, this wildlife sanctuary is the ideal location for those wishing to experience some of the best waterfowl hunting in the country, while enjoying the great outdoors.
In addition to the waterfowl, Prairie Swamp boasts some of the best Whitetail deer hunting available. A former game warden claims that Prairie Swamp is one of the top three best deer properties he has EVER seen, with many trophy-class Whitetails taken of B & C status, one measuring 197 5/8 gross!
Originally a plains animal, elk had long since vanished from the extensive range of their past. But elk have recently begun to move back into certain locations, and Prairie Swamp seems to be a preferred hangout. Elk represent a unique bonus on a property renowned for abundant ducks, geese and Whitetail deer.
One of the things the current owner loves most about Prairie Swamp is the deer hunting experience itself. “The habitat is not only conducive to productive deer hunting, but it is secluded and beautiful; bluffs across the river, geese flying low over your stand, ducks hitting the sloughs, diverse habitat such as willow thickets, cottonwood trees, Russian olive jungles, grasslands, cattail draws, all from one view, and private as it can be.”
Having walked countless properties, owned and developed six, plus consulted and implemented development on others in as many as five states, he believes that Prairie Swamp is second to none. On his initial tour of the property, the owner describes his first impressions:
“There were cattail-choked wetlands everywhere, prime for design and restoration development. The cover was so thick; you could just feel the old Whitetail bucks peering at you from inside their line of safety. Large irrigated crop fields featuring corn and alfalfa, the food was abundant. And the accretion ground (river bottom) that dictates the hunting development potential and the overall value of the property was approximately 1/2 mile wide in places, the largest I had ever seen. To cap it off, the selling owner had three monster Whitetails on his wall, and many pictures of others taken on the property. Also, having lived in the area, I already knew the high caliber of duck and goose traffic in this portion of the river. Plus I knew that this particular ground was a hotspot for monster Whitetails. Prairie Swamp is a property that could really offer the diverse treasures of the North Platte River in a maximum dose!”
Unlike the trout fishery characteristics of the upper North Platte, the lower section is a true prairie river, featuring shallow braided channels, islands, sandbars, warm-water springs and backwater wetland sloughs. The river is intermittently lined with trees, woodlands and thick cover, offering an ideal habitat to game species including Whitetail deer, Merriam and Rio Grande turkeys and most notably, migratory waterfowl. The Platte River system and its abundance of spring-fed, warm-water sloughs, represent one of the most integral components of the Central Flyway for the hundreds of thousands of mallard ducks and Canada geese that make it part of their travels every fall, winter and spring.
Prairie Swamp contains three strategically developed waterfowl hunting locations on water slough sites, and a partially developed fourth location as an additional option should it be desired. Also, crop field sites have been designed to create the perfect vantage point for field hunting geese. All hunting sites are equipped with identical 5-man fiberglass pits that have been modified to stay warm, comfortable, and free of mice and rain. Each is heated with two cook stoves, and stays toasty warn, even in sub-zero weather.
This is a chance to own one of the best trophy waterfowl and big game hunting properties not only Nebraska but in the country. Developed to a "T", Prairie Swamp is truly a hunter’s dream, and has the development potential to be something even more.
